Motor Carriers – Are You Ready for the ELD Compliance Deadline?

posted in: News | 0

If you aren’t aware, ELD stands for Electronic Logging Device.  It is an idea that represents a significant change that motor carriers must implement into their fleets.  Traditionally, truck drivers keep a log of the hours they’ve driven on paper logs to prove compliance with DOT regulations.  As of the compliance deadline, paper logs will no longer be an option for the majority of motor carriers.  The Electronic Logging Device Rule has been in the works for a while now but the compliance deadline is quickly approaching. “ELD Day” is December 18, 2017, so all non-exempt motor carriers need to be ready.

Here are some tips for ensuring you are in compliance:

Choosing an ELD solution can be overwhelming.  One place to start is to check the list of Registered ELDs on the FMCSA website. Make sure the ELD you are using is on the list because only registered ELDs are compliant. This list can be found at https://csa.fmcsa.dot.gov/ELD/List.

There are many types of solutions on the market for motor carriers.  One of the more affordable options may already be a driver’s pocket.  Use of smartphones and other wireless devices is allowed as long as the following criteria is met:

  1. The device meets the ELD rule’s technical specifications
  2. The device must be mounted in a fixed position during CMV operation and visible to the driver from a normal seated driving position
